LAKE 4, CANADICE
6.9 miles | Tranquil
Canadice Lake might be one of the smallest Finger Lakes, but that’s exactly what makes it so enjoyable for kayaking. It’s just the right size to paddle around in a single trip, giving you time to take in every bit of its scenery without feeling rushed.
When I visited, the water was calm, and halfway through my paddle, a light sprinkle began to fall. The rain softened the sounds of the world, making the lake feel even more peaceful. I spotted only one other person — a fisherman off in the distance — and the rest of the time it felt like I had the place entirely to myself.
One thing that makes Canadice Lake so special is that it’s completely undeveloped. As a protected water source for Rochester, it’s free of houses, docks, and motorboats. That means no noise, no clutter, and no distractions — just clear water, forested shorelines, and the occasional call of a bird.
By the time I finished my lap around the lake, I felt like I’d stepped out of the rush of everyday life for a while. If you’re looking for a quiet, easy paddle in a place that still feels wild, Canadice Lake is hard to beat.
